Durdans Park Cricket ground gets funding boost
Sat 24 Aug 2013The funding will be used to improve the park’s existing cricket pitch and the building of a new sports pavilion, which will have changing rooms, bathrooms, lockers and a community space. Landscape work will also be carried out and new path ways will be installed.
In 2001 Ramgarhia Sports and Social Club (RSSC) was chosen as the site’s preferred developer and has since worked alongside the Ealing Council to secure funding and to develop plans for the new facilities.
The project has already received a grant of £250,000 from the London Marathon Charitable Trust, £76,000 from Ealing Council and £55,000 from RSSC.
Once the improvement work is complete, RSSC will move into the new pavilion and use it as a base for its cricket club. RSSC will also host yoga, martial arts and aerobic exercise classes at the new pavilion, as well as run a number of educational, cultural and social activities.
The new pavilion will provide changing facilities for club’s cricket players and other users of the site, as well as several football teams who use the adjacent King George’s Playing Fields.
Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said: "This is yet another fantastic project that will create more opportunities for local people to get involved in sport. Cricket is a popular sport in the local area, but sadly the pitch at Durdans Park has been out of use since 2010. This grant from Sports England has moved us a step closer to seeing the facilities restored and for cricket to be played onsite once more."
Sachdev Singh Seyan, RSSC trustee, said: "This is a truly fantastic outcome of a good partnership effort between RSSC and Ealing Council. There is a lot of buzz and excitement in the air about us being able to secure this funding to reinstate grassroots cricket and promote access to other sports in the locality."
"The new facilities will engage with the community and create new partnerships with local stakeholder groups and schools in the area."
Work is subject the planning approval and is due to start onsite at the end of this year.If you have a local news story, share it with the rest of Southall, by using the contact form.
