Woman fined for illegal street trading
Wed 18 Dec 2013Ms Suryyai Tahir did not appear at Ealing Magistrates Court on Thursday 5 December 2013, however she was found guilty in absence of three charges of unlicensed street trading, and fined £250 for each offence.
She was also ordered by the court to pay £264 in costs, and a £25 victim surcharge, bringing the total owed to £1,039.
Council officers began investigating the illegal street trading after a member of the public reported seeing Ms Tahir selling clothing and fabrics along Southall Broadway on 4 July 2013.
She was also seen using a cardboard box to display and sell the goods on a further two occasions on 15 and 16 July 2013. These two incidents were caught on CCTV cameras.
Ms Tahir was convicted and fined for similar street trading offences in May this year.
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "I am shocked Ms Tahir continued to illegally sell goods on the street, despite being caught and convicted earlier this year. Her makeshift stall was an eyesore, and unfair on other legitimate traders in the area."
