Dangerous toys taken off the market

Sun 23 Mar 2014
A Southall importer has been fined for selling dangerous toys following a joint operation led by Ealing Council with trading standards officers from across London.

A representative of Dashmesh Company Ltd, Unit A9 Charles House, Bridge Road, Southall, appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 6 March 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to seven offences and was fined £1,200 and ordered to pay £5,600 towards the council’s costs for the case.

Mr Ahuja, director of Dashmesh Company Ltd, was also fined £1,000 after pleading guilty to four safety offences due to his neglect.

During January 2013, trading standards officers from Ealing and Enfield councils inspected toys on the premises to check that they complied with UK safety regulations. Nine out of the 10 sample toys removed and tested were unsafe.

The pushchairs had faulty closing mechanisms which could trap a child’s fingers and the speed of the ‘missiles’ projected out of the toy guns was faster than was legally permitted.

There were missing safety warnings about potential choking hazards on the toys with small parts, and some of the parts easily detached from the toys designed for children under three years old.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, cabinet member for community services and safety said: "Our priority is to protect the public from buying unsafe goods. These dangerous toys could have reached shops across London putting children at risk."

"Thanks to the on-going assistance from across other councils we are able to achieve wider reaching results and rid our boroughs of bad business practises."
