Southall Sikhs remember Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Wed 11 Jun 2014
As a mark of respect, the Sikh community in Southall served cold drinks to the public, on the death anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

This is meant to cool and calm the community during their pain and heartfelt sorrow.

The event on Southall Broadway, outside, Dokal & Sons, was organised by the Southall branch of the Shiromani Akali Dal U.K. The organisers were Mr Gurnam Singh Sarai and Mr Samra.

Mr Rajinder S. Mokha commented that the event has been taking place at this location for the past 25 years.

Ex-Councillor Zahida Abbas Noori was invited to participate in the event to "meet and share values".

Guru Arjan Dev Ji was the fifth Guru and was born in Goindval, Punjab in 1563. He completed the construction the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

He compiled all of the past Gurus' writings, along with selected writings of other saints into one book, the Holy Scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib.

In 1606, he was tortured on the orders of the Muslim Emperor Jahangir and died on 30th May 1606 in Lahore.
