Hairdresser fined for cutting corners

Sun 12 Oct 2014
A Southall hair and beauty salon has been ordered to pay more than £1,000 in fines and costs after they were caught on CCTV illegally dumping rubbish on the pavement.

Mr Ahmed Imtiaz, owner of Ahmed’s Hair & Beauty Salon, Featherstone Road Southall, appeared at Ealing Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 2 October 2014, and pleaded guilty to six offences of failing to prevent waste from his business being fly tipped on the public highway.

Mr Imtiaz was fined £600 for fly tipping and £528.88 in costs along with a £20 victim surcharge, totalling £1,148.88.

The contents of the bags included used wax strips, threading cotton and tissues as well as cuts of human hair.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: "Fly tipping is illegal, unsightly and a selfish act on behalf of this business. There is just no excuse for dumping rubbish on the pavement and it’s even worse when that rubbish includes other people’s cut hair and used beauty products."

"We will continue to advise businesses across the borough about getting rid of their waste properly, as we did with this salon, but where they blatantly choose to ignore us, and we can capture evidence, we will do everything in the council’s powers to take action."

Each year Ealing Council has to dispose of over 8,000 tonnes of waste which has been deposited on the streets. Much of this waste originates from business which should have paid for its removal as the cost of collections is not included in their business rates.
