Southall Broadway has reopened to two-way traffic for the first time in six months after the main phase of work to improve the safety and look of the Broadway.

The works are part of an £11 million project to regenerate Southall supported by Ealing Council, the Mayor of London and Transport for London. As part of the improvements the road was resurfaced, pavements were widened, streetlights were improved and four new crossing islands were installed in the road; as well as new benches and bins.

The speed limit has also changed from 30mph to 20mph to help improve safety and to assist more vulnerable road users.

Residents are reminded that as part of the changes a new restricted parking zone (RPZ) is now in place along the Broadway. This zone replaces the double yellow lines that previously marked the road surface and means that, between South Road Junction and Stanley Road, parking is only allowed in clearly marked bays. Signage is in place at the beginning and the end of the zone. The RPZ is enforced in the same way as parking on double yellow lines.

Southall Market and Herbert Road car parks are open as usual and Southall Market car park is offering reduced charges until the end of December 2014.

On Friday, 12 December, the one-way system in Beachcroft Avenue, Orchard Avenue and Herbert Road also changed from being clockwise to anti-clockwise to ease traffic congestion. All traffic accessing these streets, Punjab Lane and Herbert Road car park now enter via Beachcroft Avenue and exit via Herbert Road. The new road rules are clearly signed.

All bus routes have reverted to normal and bus stops are reopened. Some minor works will continue along Southall Broadway until spring 2015 which may cause slight delays.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said: "The street improvement works really help to enhance one of our major town centres in Ealing. I am delighted they have been completed ahead of schedule and in time for the busy festive period, allowing local people and visitors to get around the area with improved safety."
