Southall travel warning due to EID-UL-FITR
Thu 16 Jul 2015Whether the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday or Saturday will depend on the sighting of the crescent moon.
If a crescent moon is visible on Thursday evening in the UK, then Eid-ul-Fitr would be on Friday. No crescent moon will be visible in the UK.
If no crescent moon is visible in the UK, it is acceptable to follow sightings in neighbouring countries like Morocco or Saudi Arabia or any where else.
According to HM Nautical Almanac Office the crescent moon will not be visible today in Mecca or the UK, so Eid cannot be on Friday. They say "A telescopic sighting of the new crescent moon may just be possible from the south-western tip of South Africa on July 16th 2015". But a sighting needs to be with the naked eye.
But still some people wait for the Saudi Arabian announcement. If they say it has been sighted by someone in Saudi Arabia, they will declare Eid to be on Friday, even though it was not humanly possible to have seen it.
That is the major reason why Eid does not take place on the same day.
In the evening traffic restrictions may be in force in Southall to tackle any anti-social behaviour.
The Police advise against travelling through Southall, as the traffic on the main roads may grind to a halt as it gets dark.
Anyone who intends to visit family or friends during the celebrations of EID-UL-FITR in the Southall, is encouraged to use public transport. If you have a local news story, share it with the rest of Southall, by using the contact form.
