Geo news channel besotted with death and destruction

Sun 08 Jul 2007
The British media response to the Lal Masjid incident in Islamabad Pakistan has been dignified. The same cannot be said of the Pakistan satellite channels.

For several days, the Geo satellite channel has been broadcasting nothing else. It is so besotted with this grisly incident that it broadcasts highlights of the unsavory images again and again.

During the news (which is about this incident) break, before the adverts start and after the adverts end, it broadcasts these unsavory footage, as if the news is not bad enough. The whole of Pakistan (and all other caring individual) are hoping that this incident is resolved with the least number of casualties. Yet this channel is only concerned with advertising the worst bits. It ensure all the viewers see is death and destruction and nothing else. Could it be that it has run out of news item?

Tens of thousands of people in Karachi and Balochistan have been displaced by the recent floods. At least 60,000 people have been made homeless in Balochistan alone. Would it be more appropriate if these obnoxious adverts were replaced with an appeal to relieve the suffering of these people?

It is very understanding of them to show adverts in which prayers are said for an sensible end to this nightmare but totally insensitive to show images of death and destruction while doing so.

It is also very understanding of them to obtain the views of people whose children/relatives are still inside the mosque but totally insensitive to ask these bewildered and confused people "how they feel" not having any contact with your family member for a week, only to see them break down in front of you.

Should you be so insensitive as to continue with the interview?

Is it neccessary to broadcast the suffering of these people?
