Bike shop pops up in Southall
Mon 14 Sep 2015Visitors to the pop-up shop, which opens for six weeks every Saturday, from 12 September to 17 October, will be able to get free cycle checks by Dr Bike who will carry out simple repairs and give advice on maintenance.
Bike accessories will be on sale and there will be opportunities to buy new or used bikes. Information will also be available on the council’s initiatives to encourage people to cycle more such as training schemes and cycle maintenance classes.
London Bike Hub, a not-for-profit organisation, will run the shop every Saturday from 10am until 4pm from a converted shipping container at Southall Square, 57-78 High Street Southall.
Cabinet member for environment and transport, councillor Bassam Mahfouz said: "There is so much on offer in the borough to support people to take up cycling or get back on their bikes. Cycling is great exercise, low-cost and makes getting around much easier."
"This store is the ideal place to get advice on how to make sure your bike is roadworthy or find out about what training is available for those who want to feel more confident on their bikes. For anyone who isn’t sure about what type of bike or equipment to buy, our experts can advise on what’s best for their needs."
The shop is the latest initiative as part of the council’s direct support for cycling scheme which offers a range of practical help to encourage residents to cycle.
Also available this autumn, are women-only social rides. Participants can join the leisurely rides which are taking place every Sunday at Gunnersbury Park from 10am until 1pm until 4 October and every Saturday at Southall Park from 10 October until 1 November. There is no need to book cyclists can just turn up, meeting by the old tennis courts in Gunnersbury Park, W3 8LQ and the container by the Boyd Avenue entrance to Southall Park, UB1 3BT.
The Monday Cycling Club begins at Southall Park on 14 September offering free one hour training slots for adults from 9am until noon and a leisure cycle from 2-4pm. The club will be held every Monday in the park from 14 September until 12 October. The club then moves to Gunnersbury Park from Monday, 19 October until 16 November. Basic cycle maintenance classes costing £5 are also scheduled to take place at Acton Vale Community Centre, Off Beech Avenue on Saturday, 10 October and 7 November. The classes take place between 9.30am and 5pm.
