Blue bin or black bin next week?

Fri 03 Jun 2016
Ealing residents are reminded that they should take the stickers off their blue and black wheelie bins and start using them after their last collection of black bags, green boxes and white plastics sacks takes place this week.

The majority of households will move to a system of alternate weekly collections from Monday, 6 June 2016. The black wheelie bin is for rubbish and the blue wheelie bin is for everything that currently goes in the green box and white plastics sack, except for textiles and batteries which should be placed in a tied plastic bag on top of the bin.

From Monday, rubbish will be collected one week and recycling the next. Food waste will continue to be collected weekly using the small green bin.

Most households making the switch will have now received their new wheelie bins and the council is still delivering to remaining households over the next few days and over the weekend to ensure people have their bins before their first collection.

Residents that have been told they are moving to wheelie bins, but have not received them by Monday, 6 June 2016, should call the council on 020 8825 6000.

These properties should present their rubbish or recycling for collection, on the correct week using the old green boxes, white sacks, green food waste bins and black rubbish bags until they have their wheelie bins.

Residents can check their collection schedule or sign up for free SMS reminders online.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, said: "We have been working on this switch since last July and I’m excited that so many of our residents are finally going to see the benefit of the change to wheelie bins. Collecting rubbish and recycling on alternate weeks is going to reduce traffic congestion and keeping rubbish and recycling contained in wheelie bins will make a noticeable difference to the amount of litter on our local streets."

"I want to thank all of our residents for their recycling efforts over the years. I believe that collecting the dry recycling together in one wheelie bin will make it even easier for them to do the right thing and will help us to reach our 50% recycling target by 2018. I also want to remind them to keep recycling food waste, which will still be collected every week after 6 June."
