Filthy Southall food stores closed down

Mon 30 Jul 2007
Two Southall businesses were shut down for being vile, shameful, and dangerous to public health.

Ealing Council’s Environmental Health team has shut down businesses across the borough which were vile, shameful, and dangerous to public health.

Over the past six weeks Environmental action has been taken against four businesses, 2 in Southall, which were in breach of food hygiene requirements.

On 28 June Ealing Magistrates’ Court issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order on Qasim & Nasir Hussain, preventing the brothers from running a fruit and vegetable stall and storage, on a disused strip of land at 33 High Street, Southall. The inspecting officers found:

  • the general yard was strewn with rubbish and boxes, paper and general litter
  • mouldy fruit, which was attracting a large amount of flies
  • a box of plantains that had turned black and had been chewed by rats
  • rat droppings were found in the flesh of the fruit

This business is unlikely to re-open.

On 5 June Ealing Magistrates’ Court issued a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order on Breams Quality Sandwich Ltd of Dokal Industrial Estate, Southall. The inspection team found:

  • a foul stench coming from the drains, as stagnant water was collecting in channels blocked with food debris
  • the floor and walls were stained with grease that could not be easily cleaned because of the poor surfaces
  • the factory was undergoing significant building work alongside were the sandwiches were being prepared

The order has been subsequently lifted as the necessary repairs and cleaning regime have been undertaken.

Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: “I am outraged and disgusted by the conduct of these businesses. The public has the right to expect the food outlets within Ealing to be clean and hygienic."

“Ealing’s Environmental Health Offices are proactively targeting and inspecting food businesses throughout the borough and we will clamp down on those who break the rules.”
